Raccoon City was an industrial city located in the Midwestern United States. It was best known as the home of the pharmaceutical conglomerate Umbrella Corporation, which by 1998 employed approximately 30% of the city's population.
In September 1998, Raccoon City became the epicenter of a viral outbreak later known as the Raccoon City Incident, caused by the T-Virus. The catastrophe culminated on October 1st, 1998, when the U.S. government carried out the Sterilization Strategy, a missile strike that completely destroyed the city in an effort to contain the infection
