"I'm always searching for something, for someone. This feeling has possessed me I think, from that day... That day when the stars came falling."
Mitsuha is a kind, caring and supportive girl. She is also determined, sometimes persistent, frank and also adventurous. She is girlish and when switching bodies with Taki she wants him to be careful with skirts and not to take any shower. When Mitsuha inhabits Taki's body, he is considered 'girlish' and feminine, though he still manages to maintain his composure.
Taki is a kind, hardworking and caring individual, but he can sometimes be persistent. He is a very helpful, responsible and busy young man, as well organized, level-headed and sometimes quite serious. When he inhabits Mitsuha's body, he sometimes touches her chest, to which Mitsuha would call him a pervert later on. He is also very straightforward and Taki in Mitsuha's body is considered a tomboy, as he doesn't take much consideration about skirts according to Mitsuha.
1) The red braided cord that Mitsuha wears represents the invisible red string of fate that is said to connect someone to their fated person, according to Japanese tradition.
2) Mitsuha's name means "three leaves" and follows a family trait. Her grandmother, Hitoha, is "one leaf," her mother, Futaba, is "two leaves," and her little sister, Yotsuha, is "four leaves."
3) The restaurant where Taki works is called "Il giardino delle parole," which is Italian for "Garden of Words." Makato Shinkai's previous film was called The Garden of Words (2013).
